It's really dramatic for me. I am Italian and studying at the college in Dallas, Texas, and while asking a question to a teacher he said he did not understand what I was saying.
He then asked me where I was from and I answered I was from Italy. He was amazed about that and he replied "I thought you were from Ukraine." Well, I am from the East of Italy and I have a brighter skin than the average Italian and I look more like a Slovenian... but I am 100% Italian!
Guys, I need to learn how to speak English with an ENGLISH accent, because it shames me that my accent sound like the one of an Ukrainian!
Plus, when I will go back to Italy I pretend to speak English without an accent!
Answer on Are there any institutes where I can learn how to change my speaking accent? 10 points!?
Call one of the hospitals in the area, ask to speak to a speech therapy department and ask them if they have an "accent modification program."
It is one on one speech therapy to help you reduce your italian accent and prounouce words in a more "americanized" sound.
It is one on one speech therapy that helps you relearn how to shape your mouth, what part of your throat to use in making certain sounds, etc.
This is a serious commitment of time to really work at it.
But good luck!
