Italian Lake resort easy to reach from Malpensa airport?

Am considering a flight to Malpensa in Italy in May for a weekend and would like to visit one of the lakes, can anyone recommend an easy to reach lake destination with an interesting historical town? Any tips on transport and affordable accommodation you may have stayed in would be most welcome. Thank you

Answer on Italian Lake resort easy to reach from Malpensa airport?

Como and Garda Lakes are both easily accessible from Malpensa. From Malpensa, you can take the bus to Milano Centrale train station in about 50 minutes to an hour. From the station, you can take the train to Como San Giovanni station or take a train to either Desenzano or Peschiera del Garda.

If you go to Lago Garda, you can take a bus or a boat to Sirmione where there's an interesting old town with a nice castle and an extensive Roman ruin. There are several interesting towns around the lake. Malcesine and Limone on the north end of the lake are particularly nice. The castle in Malcesine is very scenic and has a small, but interesting museum. There's also a cable car up the mountain from Malcesine.

You could also take the train from Malpensa to get to Como, but you'll need to change trains at Saronno. It's faster than going to Milano Centrale and catching the train there.
