Can I get a Refund of Value Added Tax?

I'm a US citizen who's going to visit the UK, France, The Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, and Spain, I know there's VAT in all those countries with different rates, how do I get the VAT refund (my exit port is in Spain)? I know I have to keep my receipts, have all the shops stamp something and all the purchases must be unused but I'm confused how the refund will work since I'll be buying souvenirs and other things in all those countries with different rates.

Is the effort and wait at customs worth the refund?

Answer on Can I get a Refund of Value Added Tax?

Procedures for applying for a refund are available in the booklet, 'A Traveller's Guide to the Retail Export Scheme'. This booklet is available free at all Customs points, as well as at: http://www.hmce.gov.uk/notices/704-2.htm…
If your departure is from the UK, refunds are usually sent in the form of a sterling cheque, which may be cashed at a bank or at a specialist foreign exchange company.
